OIG Issues Semi-Annual Report to Congress.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently issued its Spring Semi-Annual Report covering October 1, 2015 through March 31, 2016.  The report informs the HHS Secretary and Congress of OIG activities, significant findings, and recommendations to prevent healthcare fraud, waste, and abuse in HHS programs.

Highlights of the Spring 2016 Semi-Annual Report include:

  • Institution of 428 criminal actions and 383 civil actions against individuals or entities for misconduct involving HHS programs;
  • Total expected recovery of over $2.77 billion consisting of nearly $554.7 million in audit receivables and over $2.22 billion in investigative receivables;
  • Exclusion of 1,662 individuals and entities from participating in federal health care programs; and
  • Health Care Fraud Strike Force operations resulting in charges against 87 individuals or entities, 100 criminal actions, and recovering $116.8 million in investigative receivables.
