Jim Cottos Returns to Strategic Management
Strategic Management is pleased to announce that James “Jim” Cottos has rejoined the firm as Senior Vice President.
Mr. Cottos previously worked with Strategic Management for seven years as both a Vice President and Senior Vice President. Most recently, Jim served as Chief Compliance Officer for a hospital while the organization was under a Corporate Integrity Agreement that required four Independent Review Organizations. As Chief Compliance Officer, Jim successfully submitted two required annual reports and coordinated a site visit by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG).
Mr. Cottos has over 35 years of government and private sector experience in compliance consulting and federal investigations, 25 years of which were in management and executive capacities. He is a recognized expert in the areas of corporate compliance, risk analysis and abatement, health care fraud and abuse, and litigation consulting. He specializes in providing advisory services to health care organizations in the areas of corporate compliance program development, evaluation, training as well as compliance investigations and issue resolution. Mr. Cottos has served as Interim Chief Compliance Officer for multiple health care organizations, from hospitals to disease management companies, all ranging in size from 18,000 employees to 1,500 employees. In addition, he recently worked with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to design and implement compliance program effectiveness reviews for Medicare Advantage and Part D Sponsor Organizations across the country.
In 1998, Mr. Cottos retired from federal service as the Assistant Inspector General for Investigations for the U.S. Department of Treasury where he supervised and directed a nationwide group of auditors and investigators. Prior to that, he served 15 years with the HHS OIG as Chief Inspector, where he oversaw health care fraud investigations nationwide. He also served as an HHS Regional Inspector General for Investigations where he planned, directed and reviewed the highly sensitive investigative activities within the eight states within his region. Also during his federal service, he testified before 14 Congressional Committees on fraud and abuse matters.
Upon retirement from the federal government, Mr. Cottos held senior supervisory positions with a “Big Four” accounting firm where he became intimately involved in the development, evaluation and enhancement of compliance activities and programs. In addition, he assisted a number of clients with forensic reviews and in conducting internal investigations.
