Professional Experience

John Koziol has over 30 years of experience working with healthcare compliance in both the government and private sector. His clients have ranged from hospitals, physicians, clinics, health plans, community groups, universities, state agencies, and major trade organizations.  He handles compliance issues and advisory services, including the development, implementation, operation, and assessment of compliance programs. He is a recognized expert in auditing and monitoring, risk assessment, operational reviews, education and training, and compliance program effectiveness assessments.  Mr. Koziol has recently served as a compliance officer with Puget Sound Health Partners, a healthcare company specializing in Medicare Advantage plans.

Previous Work Experience

Prior to joining Strategic Management, Mr. Koziol worked as the Vice President of client services/operations for Acumentra Health, a non-profit organization focused on improving the quality and effectiveness in healthcare.  In this role, he administered contracts, which involved improving the quality of care provided by hospitals, medical utilization review, Medicare beneficiary complaint processing, the conduct of Medicare payment integrity activities, and the analysis of substantial health care data.

Mr. Koziol has extensive government and regulatory experience, which provided him with knowledge to assist organizations in many areas of regulatory compliance and government response.  He served over 20 years as a Deputy Regional Manager for the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  As a Deputy Regional Manager, he managed CMS’ regional operations, including traditional Medicare and managed care, Medicaid state agencies, Medicare survey and certification, PRO/QIOs, and Medicare carriers and intermediaries.  He routinely negotiated complex business/financial compliance issues with the top management of Medicare contractors and Medicare state agencies.  Additionally, he was responsible for the region’s human resources, budgeting, accounting, procurement, labor relations and internal control programs.   Mr. Koziol also served as a program manager for CMS, where he supervised Medicare and Medicaid operations, Medicare financial management, Medicare peer review, and fraud and abuse control activities. Prior to his work at CMS, Mr. Koziol also worked for U.S. Public Health service as a Grants and Contracts Officer.  He also serviced as a budget examiner for the White House, Office of Management and Budget.
