Richard P. Kusserow | April 2025

The 2025 Compliance Benchmark Survey conducted by SAI Global and Strategic Management Services, LLC provides valuable insights into the current state and progress of compliance program development in the healthcare industry. One key area of focus was the challenges Compliance Officers are facing this year. Three primary concerns emerged as far more significant than others. The top concern was related to responding to new federal and states laws and regulations, highlighting the struggle to keep pace with rapidly changing requirements, particularly for those with very limited staff. In second place were concerns related to HIPAA and cyber security, which is not surprising given that the most common compliance problems facing organizations involves data breaches and failures in protecting health information. In third place was the challenge of ensuring accuracy in claims processing. After these, there was a major drop in concerns across other areas. In descending order, these were: (a) Meeting medical necessity standards; (b) Arrangements with referral sources; (c) The threat of โ€œWhistleblowersโ€; (d) COI by members of management and/or board; and (e) Sunshine Act compliance.
